Oscar Piastri has admitted he did not fully anticipate the “fundamental overhaul” required in driving an F1 car following the recent sweeping regulatory changes. These new rules have significantly reshuffled the Formula 1 hierarchy, with Piastri’s McLaren team experiencing a notable regression in performance during the initial races of the 2026 season. Despite this setback, the young Australian driver maintains that the team’s current situation is “certainly not a complete disaster,” even after a challenging start to the campaign.
The 25-year-old endured a difficult beginning, suffering two consecutive Did Not Starts (DNS) at his home Grand Prix and then in China. However, he made an impressive comeback, securing a second-place finish at the third round, the Japanese Grand Prix. Having fiercely contended for the drivers’ championship against teammate Lando Norris and eventually Max Verstappen last year, Piastri was asked if he felt frustrated by the inability to continue battling for titles under more consistent regulations.
Responding to media inquiries, the McLaren driver stated: “Not really frustration. We knew it was going to be a massive reset of everything.” He elaborated, “Maybe not quite as big as it has been… I don’t think we thought it would be a pretty fundamental overhaul of what driving a race car looks like. But I think we knew that this was a possibility. We’re still towards the front, certainly not a complete disaster.”
Piastri highlighted McLaren’s continuous learning process in their pursuit of closing the gap to front-runners like Ferrari and Mercedes. This progress became evident later in the Japan weekend, where he successfully held off George Russell in the early stages of the 53-lap race and potentially could have pushed for victory without a safety car intervention. “Are we where we want to be? No,” he conceded. “But I think we’re understanding all the time how we can improve across so many areas – that is the biggest thing.”
He further explained the team’s multi-faceted approach to improvement: “It’s not like we have one problem that we need to fix, or anything like that. It’s a little bit in a few different areas, and that adds up pretty quickly. So that’s the biggest thing. But we went this year knowing that it would probably look pretty different. So yeah. Would I have loved to have stayed in last year’s car at this point? Yes, probably, but it is what it is.”
